Moving Ants

Here is something I like to repost every year at this time right before these pests get themselves estasblished.  The Ant War We tried building a raised garden bed for herbs and vegetables but after several years of the ant kingdom battles, we surrendered. I drew the line when it came to them getting in my house. The first thing we had was sugar ants coming in around the frame of the kitchen window. These are tiny, annoying and organized little creatures. I spent a small fortune on every spray, powder and trap I could find. Nothing worked. Then in an act of desperation I put vaseline around the window frame. That actually worked and they went away. I've finessed this trick over the years so you can't even see it.  Then the parade began. #eclecticSoapbox #organicSolutions #organic The parade started coming in through our second level sliding doors. Again I tried so many things to keep these little buggers out. Nothing worked. In that case we ended up replacing our sliding doors. Not a cheap solution but it worked. The last two years our battle has moved inside around the front door frame. Streams of these little OCD soldiers…

Spring Ribbon Wreath

For a few years now I've had BINS of ribbon lying around waiting for some brilliant and beautiful reason to use them. They were mostly from my scrapbooking days. Every now and then the kids would get into my stash and do a few things but it's mostly still a BIG HUGE PILE.  Because Easter is later this year I actually had time to make up this cute little wreath. Let me tell you how: First Grab as many things that are seasonal as you can find. This picture shows I didn't use everything I thought I would and I actually needed to add more ribbon as I went along. I liked how the greens and purples went together - you can use this as a spring wreath too if you take the eggs off.    Second The styrofoam wreath I used was flaking all over the place so I ended up putting tape all over it. I cut the ribbon about 14" long and tied 4 of each kind around the wreath. It is pretty small which is why I used only 4 of each colour - plus some of my ribbon is very thick.  I tried to layer them…

Lacy Angel Wings Ornament

DIY Christmas Ornament Blog Hop My daughter received something like this lovely little angel ornament long ago when she was in Junior Kindergarten. Since then, we have modified her to look even more cute. You can use these on your tree, on gifts, or as gifts. I think they'd make lovely placeholders too. To make them you need pipe cleaners, wood beads, lace with a straight edge and a seam on one side. Also a fine tipped marker and something to hang them with. I added faces to the wood beads before I put them together in case I messed it up. You can pick whatever colour of pipe cleaner you want - I have used white with gold flecks before but I couldn't find them this time. White, silver and gold are also nice. Thread the pipe cleaner through the seam. This is tricky. I have found the easiest way to do it is to give it to your husband to figure out. Today, my hubs was not around so I actually used a feather, (which is why they look a bit pink - it was a pink feather,) with a hole at the tip. I put the feather…

DIY Fire Pit Oven

The Fire Pit/Oven Thingy Here, in Ontario, we are sometimes graced by warm days for swimming and cooler nights for snuggling in the same day. These tend to occur, albeit rarely, during the season previously known as SPRING. It's been a pretty good year for this phenomena. This weekend in Keswick we celebrated a birthday with some awesome family peeps. As the day wound down, Uncle Mike surprised us all by declaring we would be able to sit around a fire that night. Mike's Dad had given him an old cast iron stove, or fire pit/oven thingy, that had been sitting around in his garage. Mike, clever man that he is, decided it would be perfect as a safe fire pit in a residential area. We filled it up with wood, paper from the party, and some dried yard waste. Then the match was struck. The chimney vented out the smoke, and the side vents were open to allow air to stir things up inside. Mike closed the door while things were getting going as there were many embers from the paper. You could feel the warmth coming from it right away. In a house these things will warm up the area and keep it cozy for long periods.…

Ants Be Gone!
