Netflixing Through the Holi-daze

What a year 2016 has been. For better, for worse. I think next year will be MUCH BETTER. In the meantime I am fully prepared to shut off my brain and allow the reward chemicals to seep out and gently buffer in the new year.  I've learned a lot about bingeing this year - a sport I am fully prepared to participate in on a moments notice. It turns out bingeing helps release those chemicals that make you feel happy. Makes sense right?  You know that feeling you get when you finish a really good book or show? How you sort of feel like you are left hanging or miss the store so much you grieve a little? I also learned that people, me included, have a fairly predictable habit of going from a series to a movie then back to a new series. According to research, after finishing a series, people take a few days off before committing to a new show. During that break, more than half of us watch a movie. This little video explains this in a cute way:  https://youtu.be/Xxrpg6ofwp4 When I first learned about this I was like - OMG that is totally me! Anyway,…

Lacy Angel Wings Ornament

DIY Christmas Ornament Blog Hop My daughter received something like this lovely little angel ornament long ago when she was in Junior Kindergarten. Since then, we have modified her to look even more cute. You can use these on your tree, on gifts, or as gifts. I think they'd make lovely placeholders too. To make them you need pipe cleaners, wood beads, lace with a straight edge and a seam on one side. Also a fine tipped marker and something to hang them with. I added faces to the wood beads before I put them together in case I messed it up. You can pick whatever colour of pipe cleaner you want - I have used white with gold flecks before but I couldn't find them this time. White, silver and gold are also nice. Thread the pipe cleaner through the seam. This is tricky. I have found the easiest way to do it is to give it to your husband to figure out. Today, my hubs was not around so I actually used a feather, (which is why they look a bit pink - it was a pink feather,) with a hole at the tip. I put the feather…

The Crown Feature Image

The Crown Cometh

There are so many great shows on Netflix these days I feel like I can't keep up. Especially during the busy times like, well, now. I'm definitely setting time aside for this one coming up November 4th - The Crown. I was fortunate to be able to attend a premiere of the first two episodes and had the chance to ask two of the stars from the show questions. Jared Harris plays King George the VI and Vanessa Kirby plays Princess Margaret.  They were kind enough to answer questions about getting into character, the amazing sets and costumes, and how their perceptions of these real life people have changed.  To get into character Vanessa said she read everything she could find, listened to traditional music and watched recordings of the Royals. I asked what kind of reaction they've had to The Crown from the Royal family itself and this is what they said:  https://youtu.be/REdJYUlCvRI Peter Morgan, creator of this series as well as the movie The Queen, (starring Helen Mirren,) takes us on a journey to see the private side of this intensely public family. Claire Foy represents Queen Elizabeth in this television series and she is remarkable. She communicates so much with her face when ironically, she is…

Home of the Boovs

We just watched a delightful move called Home. It's a Dreamworks Animation film on Netflix and sure it's a "kid's" film but my 17 year old and I loved it. It kind of reminded me of shows like the Flintstones where the humour can be appreciated by kids and adults. With the voice talents of Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Nick Fletcher how could it not be awesome?  In brief, it's about a misfit alien named 'Oh' whose species conquers Earth, befriends an adventurous teen girl named 'Tip' and together they save the world. I also love how this show has a strong female lead. Both main characters are determined and confident about themselves. It's hilarious. It has repeatable lines like "Can I come into the out now," "Parties are so much more fun when other people show up," "I do not fit in I fit out," and ice cream is defined as "frozen sweetened bovine secretion". Many issues are touched upon including being different, not having friends, making the best of a situation, persevering, being alone, loving yourself, and being with people who accept you as you are.  After the movie the adventure continues with the animated series as well. Exclusive to Netflix, Season 1 is available now!  We both really enjoyed…

DIY Fire Pit Oven

The Fire Pit/Oven Thingy Here, in Ontario, we are sometimes graced by warm days for swimming and cooler nights for snuggling in the same day. These tend to occur, albeit rarely, during the season previously known as SPRING. It's been a pretty good year for this phenomena. This weekend in Keswick we celebrated a birthday with some awesome family peeps. As the day wound down, Uncle Mike surprised us all by declaring we would be able to sit around a fire that night. Mike's Dad had given him an old cast iron stove, or fire pit/oven thingy, that had been sitting around in his garage. Mike, clever man that he is, decided it would be perfect as a safe fire pit in a residential area. We filled it up with wood, paper from the party, and some dried yard waste. Then the match was struck. The chimney vented out the smoke, and the side vents were open to allow air to stir things up inside. Mike closed the door while things were getting going as there were many embers from the paper. You could feel the warmth coming from it right away. In a house these things will warm up the area and keep it cozy for long periods.…

Top May IG Shots

May was a great month to have a camera - or in my case, an iPhone 6 camera. Much of the world around me was waking up and bursting out of it's winter sleep.  We had some unseasonably warm weather where I am and I think this is why the trees and flowers were blooming so early. It was a feast for the senses.  Here are the images I took that seemed to be the most popular in May on my Instagram account:  The beach continues to be one of my favourite places:   Found some pretty bits and pieces to take pictures of today. Instagram Favs – #FiveonFriday

I've joined an exciting group of awesome bloggers who are making #fiveonfriday posts every week. I'm looking forward to learning more about these other bloggers and getting tips and ideas about how to bring great content to my blog.  Check them out: Product Junkie Two Fun Moms Simple On Purpose Just Another Edmonton Mommy Canadian Basics #FIVEONFRIDAY Part One My first foray into the #fiveonfriday realm will be to showcase some of my favourite Instagram's. I've been looking for a way to include them in my blog. Some of them make it to my actual blog posts as images in the content or featured images. They really capture my 'art-part'. As a visual person, I've got so much to say in my images and the old saying is that "a picture speaks a thousand words." (By the way, I kind of snuck in another Instagram picture as my feature image. This is from my son's prom photoshoot with the awesomely talented Michelle Kimmerly at SnowAngel Studios. She is so creative with her poses and I couldn't resist taking this shot.) My Instagram friends seem to like them. I hope you do too! 1. This one impressed me so much I made…

THIS Just Happened…BACONANZA!

BACONANZA! There are many crazy things on the internet these days. So many. Recently, Hubs and I have discovered the mad talents of the Ninja powered, safety oriented and video savvy Crazy Russian Hacker. This man combines elegant speech with wildly clever demonstrations for a myriad of breathtaking and awesome life hacks. Seriously - he is one cool dude and I admire his confidence. In an attempt to read something other than the usual health conscious bloggity-blog that pops up at this time of the year, I decided to post about one of my favourite things - Bacon. The timing for seeing this video was perfect. Most recently intriguing is his video on bacon. Yes B.A.C.O.N. I once told Thing 1 that what goes best with bacon is more bacon. (Perhaps creating a monster in the process.) When we saw this video, Hubs decided that this insanity would have to be tested. Immediately. And so we did. Here is our story... ;) It is at the end of this blog if you would like to see it. Step 1 of BACONANZA: Finally all those underwater basket-weaving courses are coming in handy. Like a weave, the bacon goes over, under, over, under etc until they are all…

How to be a Super Hero!

Something very special happened today. Thing 1 donated blood for the first time. What a mature, selfless thing to do. He's only 17. He joins a long line of donor's in this family including his Dad (10 years) and Grandpa (who was a donor since it started until his death in 1999.)  Click here to find out: Who does my blood donation help? Two other teens we know were there as well. Yay teens! Each month Thing 2 volunteers at the blood bank and plans to donate as soon as she reaches 17. It was a long wait so I decided to put together a blog post to help inform people about the process. Each step is helpfully labeled along the way when you are there. Click here to find out:  Can I donate? Step 1: Register. Here they get you signed in, check your health card, give you a red placard to carry around and in Thing 1's case - give you a First Timer's sticker. They then thank you for your gift. Step 2: At this station they poke your finger and check your iron level. You are given a confidential survey to fill out in a private area. They talk to…

Dollar Store Treasures Part One

You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout I'm telling you why...  Have you gone treasure hunting lately? I went to a great xmas party tonight and saw some quality dollar store decorations. They looked pretty fancy. You don't even have to be on a budget to justify getting these now. Very soft, festive hand towel. Gail and Kelly enjoying all their hard work. Not a dollar store item but tres cool anyway. Cool giant stockings - big enough to fit a loved one into? Light up necklace! These cookie containers are thick, have tight fitting lids and are festive! Delicious punch made by dissolving Jolly Rancher candies into vodka. Added to cream soda and a bunch of other yummy ingredients. Even the pooches get in on the fun. Love this hat/beard combo. Most festive elf of all!

Ready to Feel all Warm and Fuzzy Inside?

I just saw the cutest Pygmy Marmoset. Actually, I can't confirm it is the cutest - I've never seen one before. Meet Ninita. She was born deaf and rejected by her parents. Happily she was adopted by some loving people and, well, as you will see, she seems quite happy. http://youtu.be/g6ZM2Q-D0b8
