Girls Movie Night Has Arrived!

We have been talking about doing a Girls Pizza / Movie Night for so long and it is finally here! There will be lots of yummy treats, wine and pizza. The only thing is we aren't sure  what to watch yet so I am bringing the following 3 Netflix ideas to the table: The Discovery SUPER weird idea that this scientist has discovered where you go when you die. Or has he? Millions of people around the planet decide to kill themselves to go where he says they will go but what really happens to them? I have seen this movie and…

Do you ever get that feeling?

Have you ever been watching something on your phone, or other device in public and felt like you weren't the only one? It seems that 45% of us have noticed someone 'backseat bingeing', and some were actually embarrassed about what they were watching. I don't know about you, but I'm not going to watch anything in public that would make me feel embarrassed. Especially since in a recent survey conducted by SurveyMonkey, it was discovered that 27% of the 'snoopers' have actually interrupted the viewer to start a conversation about it! This cracks me up.  When I travel I like…

Travelling the Adult Way

We just came home from an amazing vacation in Mexico. Full of things to do, see, smell and taste, my husband and I were enthralled with it all - including the margaritas. We had not flown anywhere without the kids in 22 years. It was epic.  We snorkelled in the Caribbean Sea in Cozumel, explored the grounds of 7000 year old pyramids in the Yucatan, and swam in two natural cenotes near Playa Del Carmen, amongst other things.  My brother and sister in law hosted our visit and organized the exciting site seeing. My brother was an excellent tour guide…

Very Scary

Are you a fan of scary movies? I am not. At least not any more. Something about being in control of my own life and having kids made me a scaredy cat of all that crazy stuff. When I was "not an adult" and had very little responsibility for my life, I loved scary movies. No longer. I just can't do it. Nope. It's not about being afraid of every day stuff - I can deal with that. It's when my imagination gets engaged and I realize all the things I am SURE are not real suddenly look so real!…

Empty Nest Bingeing

Up until a few weeks ago, there would probably have been great discussion about what show we should watch during the infrequent times we'd watch tv as a family. As the kids have grown up, we've spent less and less time together watching movies and shows. It's not that our interests became different - actually we all seem to watch the same kind of shows now that they are older. It's more that we had different preferences for when we watch. I'm more of an early evening kind of watcher whereas my kids prefer to stay up later. empty nest…

Decisions, Decisions…

Have you had one of those nights, or days, when you couldn't decide what to watch? Sometimes we want sci-fi, or comedy, other times something educational. I like that about Netflix - they separate shows and movies into categories to help us decide. We want to make sure that the rare moments we get to sit down together and enjoy some tube time are satisfying, entertaining and useful. I find when I have had a particularly adventurous day and am especially pooched by the end of it that science fiction or adventure is what I look for. I like disappearing…

The Meaning of Netflix

I ran a contest on my Instagram account recently for some free Netflix and the qualifier was to nominate a friend who didn't have it. I thought that would be a tall order - doesn't everyone have it by now? Why would anybody want to have cable with the commercials, delays, and frequent broadcasting disruptions?  I was very surprised to learn that there are people out there who don't have it. Crazy right? I was asked 'What is Netflix' and I had to think about how to properly answer this question. Technically it is a service that allows you to…

6 Shows for a Rainy Day

With the very rainy summer we've had so far, I did a survey to find out what shows or movies my girlfriends would watch if they were away and it rained so hard for the entire time that they were forced to stay in. Most of the responses were about not watching tv but instead talking, drinking wine, playing board games, and dancing in the rain. D'oh!  After modifying my question slightly to see what they'd potentially watch with their female friends "if the rare and unlikely opportunity presented itself where they had no other choice," these are 6 of…

The Summer Drive Hack

Have you heard the great news? (This is something I would have loved when my kids were little.) Netflix has teamed up with Rogers to give you free "Download Zones" on some major routes for every long weekend this summer - until September 1st! This is a great idea to kill time on the long drives up or if any 'overtired' incidents occur on the way back, stop off for a quick download on the way home. If your kids are anything like mine were, after a day of rabble rousing with the cousins or at an awesome park, they'd either…

6 Reasons Why

This April we were introduced to a new show on Netflix that has stirred many passionate responses from people across the country. We have heard of youth facilities that have actually banned this show from their lineup concerned about how it will be perceived by youth. This response surprises myself, my husband who works with youth and my daughter who is an 18 year old teen. She was actually motivated to write this post to share her thoughts on why she thinks we should all watch 13 Reasons Why, get into it on a personal level, and talk.  My reasons why we should all…

Watching Strong Women

Then When I was a kid I found lots of heroes who were women on tv. Most of my life lessons occurred on the small screen while I was desperately attempting to ignore the chaos around me created by my siblings. It was the only escape as I fantasized about being a "grown up".  There wasn't a more obvious option than Wonder Woman with her truth lasso. Charlie's Angels had skills I admired and it seemed to me that if you were to combine these three women you would have the perfect human. They were what I envisioned as the "Modern Woman" - able to take…

Cheating

As couples go, we all make sacrifices for the other person. It can be offering the last piece of cake, the larger portion of the bed, or watching with them as the same struggling hockey team loses once again. We do things for the other person that we don't really want to because we love them. cheating Then there are the TV show commitments - in the 'olden days' you had to wait to watch a show weekly and record it if someone couldn't be there at that time or get the show when it came out a year later on DVD or…

The OA on Netflix

The Best Show Have you watched this series yet? Or more importantly have you finished it? IF NOT DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER. I don't want to ruin it for you! I have been waiting to discuss this show since I saw it and I can't wait any longer.  https://youtu.be/DvHJtez2IlY I found it a bit difficult to watch at first - the back and forth in time was confusing and created more questions than answers. HOWEVER I stuck with it and at the end of each episode there was a cliff hanger that forced me to go to the next…

Netflixing Through the Holi-daze

What a year 2016 has been. For better, for worse. I think next year will be MUCH BETTER. In the meantime I am fully prepared to shut off my brain and allow the reward chemicals to seep out and gently buffer in the new year.  I've learned a lot about bingeing this year - a sport I am fully prepared to participate in on a moments notice. It turns out bingeing helps release those chemicals that make you feel happy. Makes sense right?  You know that feeling you get when you finish a really good book or show? How you…

Friday Night Movie Night

Ever since the kids started school we've declared Friday night the time for sitting around the tube, eating popcorn and watching movies together. Even now with one of our 'littles' away at school, we still keep up the tradition. It involves the treats of pizza, pop and popcorn.  It's nice to have a tradition in this day and age. The social lives are busy with the teenagers and my husband works two jobs away from home but one thing that is constant is our Friday night movie night.  How do we decide what to watch? It's a matter of polling to see if the mood is…
