How the Strike Stole Christmas

This post was submitted by concerned Ontario College student Emma Harris.  It was 5 weeks before Christmas, And all through the campus, Not a student was stirring, Not even a hippocampus (apparently). The seasons have changed but the strike has not. With Christmas fast approaching, over 500,000 students in Ontario are waiting to hear a solution to this historic strike. In the weeks leading up to the strike my classmates and I were reassured that “it’ll only last a week or two”; and that they’ve "never lost a semester before”. That is obviously not true now that we are entering…

Post Secondary Blues

The graduate with a Science degree asks, "Why does it work?" The graduate with an Engineering degree asks, "How does it work?" The graduate with an Accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?" The graduate with a Liberal Arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?" My son, half of my pride and joy, my first greatest work of art - my Thing 1. I love this person so much. I have dedicated my life to bringing Thing 1 and Thing 2 into a constant and happy state of living. In his final year of highschool, Thing 1 entered a…

Toonies4Tummies

I've just had the pleasure of watching an auditorium full of high school kids turn into Agents of Change. These future leaders came together with their teachers and school administration to donate a couple of dollars each for the pleasure of watching a movie together. Each kid in that audience learned that there are more than 36,000 kids in their region who rely on nutrition programs to eat at school or in community centres daily. toonies4tummies In this post I'm going to give you the chance to donate to this program online three times. This is the first time - click…

Eclectic Review of Jamberry StyleBox Nail Wraps

Is there someone on your list who loves to get their nails done but is short on time and money? Sounds exactly like the students I know. In researching ideas for my "Last Minute Gift Ideas Students Won't Actually Hate" Gift Guide, StyleBox by Jamberry was suggested. Each set of nail wraps are able to do your finger nails 2-4 times each, depending on the size. Way less than the $35…

The Return of Thing 1

I drove Thing 1 back to School today. It wasn't a very dramatic farewell as it has been every other time. I'd heard that Thanksgiving was when: Stress from everything either makes them crash or it all starts to make sense; They feel more comfortable in their dorms, and know where everything is on campus; The kids come back to school with colds ( he's predictably got the sniffles ); He's definitely fitting in now and is more comfortable.  A certain calmness has descended.  This weekend marks the first visit home from Thing 1 - the first time since he's left to go to…

Moving in day…AKA the BIG LEAP

(Here is an audio version I recorded of this blog. Feel free to listen as you read through although I have to warn you - I get a bit emotional!) Listen: [audio m4a="http://www.eclecticsoapbox.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Moving-In-Day.m4a"] or, Read: This was the day I had been dreading for months. The day my first born - Thing 1, moved out of our home to go to school for four years. Guess what? I survived. But it has taken me two weeks to sit down and write about it. The first week I still felt too fragile. Nothing was right when I woke up in the…

A History of Residency

Welcome to my friend and guest poster Nan Kulset. Glad to have your reflections posted here! This is something I wouldn't have thought of myself but now that you mention it... A History of Residency 1966 – 2015 As a Student Finance Advisor, I meet with a lot of eager students who are hoping to tap into our fine country’s public financial reserves with the end goal of making their way in life. Every province in Canada has a different name for government student funding. In Ontario, it’s known as OSAP. The funding tool is helpful to students with financial need…
